Get Thinking: Is Needlepoint Seasonal?
Share
Is needlepoint seasonal? Do you find yourself stitching more during the winter when it's too cold to venture outside? Under a cozy blanket, ambient lighting coming from the fireplace and the Christmas tree, football on the TV, and a warm hot cocoa on your sofa table. Or do you find yourself stitching more in the summer when the sun is out and so are you? Under the warm summer sun, sunglasses on, umbrella up, no TV in sight, and a cool, refreshing cocktail on your outdoor side table.
The scenes I laid out above are so starkly contrasting in nature but can still offer the same benefits to the needlepoint stitcher. Relaxation, time to unwind, and a chance to do something we love--needlepoint! I think each of these seasons come with different waves of time flexibility for each stitcher. The hockey or football mom may see the fall and winter time as the busiest of the year while the accountant or teacher may see it as much busier than the spring or summer.
I tend to stitch with the seasons which definitely makes it seasonal for me. I like to stitch my bunnies, eggs, and floral canvases in the spring, my Americana and beach canvases in the summer, my football themed and autumnal canvases in the fall, and my villages, nativities, and Santa canvases in the winter. However, the needlepoint finishing schedule doesn't always align with this preference. Because of this, I have seen people who distinctly like to stitch out of season in order to have finished pieces to enjoy during the seasons.
I think it all boils down to preference as to whether needlepointing is seasonal. That's the beauty of the craft! Do it however you please!
